and I decided that this product would help them enjoy their new TVs full potential. I have a blu-ray player and it looks pretty darn close in picture quality. We also watched "Mystic River" on the new player.
The dark colors tended to wash out a little bit, but that could have been the setting on their TV as well.Overall, a must buy for folks who won't notice the difference between upconversion and blu-ray. The picture was pretty good and a drastic improvement over their older $20 DVD player.
I got this for my parents for Christmas 2008. I'm not sure if this has to do with more simple graphics, but it looked amazing.
Can't beat the price and the quality is great. They recently upgraded their TV to a High Def unit (finally).
I noticed that the biggest difference in picture quality is on animated movies.
So, if you buy it, be sure to place it at a level at which you can stand comfortably while it doe it's thing.I also have had it freeze on occasion. I've often wondered why manufacturers don't add an on/off switch on most electronics which physically disconnects the power from the electronics, thus negating the need to trace down a power cord among all those typically behind a video setup and pull it of the receptical.Even computers don't have this anymore.Oh well. Video output is very good.My complaint about this product is about it's speed of operation. This is easily fixed by unplugging the unit and plugging it in again. It takes too long to start, to respond to input buttons, etc. I don't know why this should be.
In fact, it died after my warranty expired. If you want quality, go quality. It seems now that they have joined the masses with building junk for a mass market. I bought this dvd thinking that Philips is reasonable quality. I'd also have second thoughts about Magnavox. Judging by other reports from other sites, various people have had the same problem. Philips makes them too.
Its very slow in reading the dvd and the remote doesnt work until you are facing the machine head-on. They used to be a manufacturer that you could rely on. Im rather disappointed with the way Philips has marketed this. Cheap and nasty. You will ultimately get what you pay for.
It has a 1 yr warranty and it doesnt last more than a year. Dont go cheap. My tv screen has turned pink and green when playing a dvd so I think the player has burnt out. The player is slow to load and slow to pick up the start of the dvd. I got mine about 1 year ago and thats all it lasts.
The bells and whistles make it a real bargain, but I am concerned about reliability. However, that being said, it does do what a dvd player is supposed to do. It upconverts to 1080p and even though they don't list it, it will bitstream DTS. I also own the prior year's model. I will update if I start having any problems with it. The 3980 just seems cheap. The prior year's model is a much better unit. It's so lightweight, my HDMI cable keeps causing it to turn sideways in the cabinet.
Shutting off the unit will not do, as this puts it in "standby". I'm in the process of leaving the unit on at all times (by disabling the automatic standby mode) to see if this will solve the problem, although it would waste a little electricity. Although the unit produces a good picture and generally works well, it has one fatal flaw. This is a real pain if your power cord is plugged in behind a cabinet, as is mine. The unit is probably to0 inexpensive to return for this problem, but I would recommend customers spend a little more for something else. Every so often (maybe once a week wiith light use) it will not read any disc. This can be rectified by unplugging the unit from the electrical power and then plugging it back in.
